Load up the whole family, bring them to Dawson City, and make family vacation memories that will last a lifetime!
To start, pop by the Visitor Information Centre on Front St. and ask to borrow a gold pan- you will need this later. From Dawson City, travel 10 minutes out of town and turn right onto Bonanza Road, and at km 12 your adventure will begin. Stop at Dredge No. 4 to learn about what it took to build, operate and maintain this massive machine (informational signage onsite). Continue another few minutes to walk the trail at Discovery Claim to the spot where gold was first discovered in 1896. From there continue to Free Claim #6 where you can try your hand at gold panning. Grab that pan you borrowed from the VIC and see what gold you can find- finders keepers!
Hop in a canoe and spend an afternoon out on the river. Klondike Adventure River Tours offers a rafting experience complete with a knowledgeable guide who will make your journey down the Klondike river both fun and informative for the whole family. Pack a picnic and enjoy lunch on one of the many small islands you come across before heading back onto the shores of Dawson City.
It wouldn’t be summer without this frosty treat! Klondyke Cream and Candy will satisfy all the different frozen treat preferences of your group- ice cream, sundaes, frozen yogurt and more. Afterwards, cross the street and enjoy your treat in Waterfront Park or walk the dyke along the Yukon River where you will find interpretive panels with Dawson and Yukon River history.
Fire trucks are fascinating, no matter how old you are! Walk down Front Street until you reach the Dawson City Fire Fighters Museum. There you will see fire trucks new and old (Dawson was the first town in Yukon to have a fire department) and maybe even have the chance to live out childhood dreams and sit in the front seat of one!!
No visit to Dawson is complete without visiting the Midnight Dome. Take the 20 minute drive and arrive to a beautiful view overlooking Dawson, the Yukon River, Ogilvie Mountains and the goldfields that is sure to memorize everyone.
Get outside and enjoy one of our many trails! There is an extensive trail system in the Dawson area which can cater to all ages- from short, flat walks to longer climbs on the hillside. Bring your mountain bikes and traverse the trails on the dome- including a small terrain park area.
Lastly, what kid doesn’t love a jungle gym? There are multiple playgrounds in town including in the community garden (on 3rd), the school (on 5th) and in Minto Park next to a skate park. If sports are more your family’s speed, there is a tennis court, basketball court and baseball diamond at Minto Park as well!
It doesn’t matter what you choose to do, Dawson will deliver on making an unforgettable family vacation!
