SUMMARY:DCMF Songwriter-in-Residence: Naomi Kavka with Jordy Walker
DESCRIPTION:Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\nEvent Details\n\nTime: May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm – May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm\n\nCost: \n\nVenue: \n\nAddress: \n\nPhone: \nLearn MoreJoin us for a musical evening in the KIAC Ballroom!\n \nNaomi Kavka is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Smithers\, BC. A classically trained cellist\, vocalist\, and guitar player\, Kavka brings a myriad of influences to her songs\, forming a daring indie-rock sound that is musically polished\, lyrically visceral\, and emotionally raw. Her songs come from the unique perspective of a queer woman\, a child of a refugee\, a resident of the precipice of the wilderness of Canada. Kavka's latest album\, Then and Now (2024)\, is a collection of 8 songs produced by Jordy Walker. Ranging from driving indie jams\, melancholic ballads\, snarky anthems\, and art rock improvisations\, Then and Now demonstrates Kavka's fearlessness and range as a performer and songwriter.\n \nJordy Walker (he/him) is a musician\, composer\, record producer\, and sound artist based in Whitehorse\, Yukon. He has produced over 50 records and worked on an equal number of films\, theatre and contemporary dance pieces.\n \nRSVP on Facebook HERE

SUMMARY:Les Hay Babies
DESCRIPTION:Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\nEvent Details\n\nTime: May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm – May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm\n\nCost: \n\nVenue: \n\nAddress: \n\nPhone: \nView Web SiteBuy TicketsLes Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \n________________________________________________________________________________ \nThe Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \nAs part of Coup de Cœur Francophone 2025\, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\, in partnership with the Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY)\, is proud to present The Hay Babies – Tintamarre! \nLes Hay Babies are friends first: fun comes before work and work is done while having fun. New Brunswick-born Acadians Julie Aubé\, Katrine Noël and Vivianne Roy have been bringing forth their sparkling\, multifaceted folk-rock for over a decade\, renewing their musical proposition with each new release. Since forming a band in 2011\, they have launched their EP Folio (2012) and the albums* Mon homesick heart* (2014)\, La 4ième dimension (version longue) (2016)\, and Boîte aux lettres (2020)\, shifting from indie-folk and country to classic rock and disco. They reinvent their sound once again with their fourth album\, to come out in 2024: a trademark of theirs as much as their unwavering drive and interest in actualizing sounds from past decades.

DESCRIPTION:Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\nEvent Details\n\nTime: May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm – May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm\n\nCost: \n\nVenue: \n\nAddress: \n\nPhone: \nView Web SiteBuy TicketsSarah Harmer is a multiple award-winning\, platinum-selling singer-songwriter and environmental activist. Her solo music career launched with the now classic debut You Were Here (2000) and includes six critically acclaimed albums\, including her latest\, Are You Gone\, released via Arts & Crafts in 2020. \nA deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life\, the urgency of the climate crisis\, and the question of loss\, Sarah called the album a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut. Its simple title\, Are You Gone\, is a meditation on presence and a bookend to the questions posed on You Were Here – a sharpened\, more electric confrontation with the realities of nature and human nature. \nBetween co-founding the citizen’s organization PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) and leading the successful effort to prevent an open-pit gravel mine in a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve on the Niagara Escarpment\, Sarah has become a fixture in local politics and advocacy. In 2022\, Sarah helped launch the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition in her home province of Ontario to protect water\, farmland\, and biodiversity. This spring\, she received the prestigious 2025 Juno Humanitarian Award\, presented by Dr. David Suzuki in Vancouver BC for her human rights and advocacy work\, and was recently honoured with the keys to the city of Burlington presented by Mayor Marianne Meed Ward for her ongoing contributions to the region. \nSarah is currently writing songs for a new album.

SUMMARY:Basia Bulat - The Garden Tour
DESCRIPTION:Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\nEvent Details\n\nTime: May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm – May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm\n\nCost: \n\nVenue: \n\nAddress: \n\nPhone: \nBasia Bulat presents THE GARDEN live at Dënäkär Zho - the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture in Dawson City\, YT. \nIntroducing The Garden: a STRINGS ALBUM and a RETROSPECTIVE from a room in Montreal with the windows open\, and the wind moving\, and the leaves changing\, and a spring-coloured secret on the tip of Basia Bulat's tongue. \nThe band made it in a pandemic. Bulat and her old friend Mark Lawson\, with whom she recorded the Polaris-and Juno-nominated album Tall Tall Shadow. Bulat and her husband\, Legal Vertigo's Andy Woods. Bulat and her friends Ben Whiteley\, ZouZou Robidoux\, Jen Thiessen\, John Corban and Tomo Newton\, four fifths of whom form a string quartet\, because did we mention this is a STRINGS ALBUM? Not a greatest hits but a re-configuration: a chance to record anew some songs that Bulat didn't fully understand when she originally composed them\, five or ten or fifteen years ago. As she first sang in 2006 —and again last fall\, in that second-storey apartment: We gave away our hearts / before we knew what they were. \nThe Garden gathers fourteen string arrangements by three different arrangers (Owen Pallett\, Paul Frith\, and Zou Zou Robidoux)\, revisiting material from all five of Bulat's studio albums. There's Pallett's interpretationof 2010's "Heart of my Own\," calling back to the Béla Bartók compositions that marked Bulat's high-school career as an upright bassist. There's Frith's "Infamous\," which turns 2016'sprickly kiss-offinto something open-facing and generous. And there's Robidoux's reimagining of "Are You In Love?" —released just last year —which here becomes a whirling ballroom dance\, full of discovery. Bulat performs throughout\, finding new feelings for old lines. Distance teaches; distance reveals things. "I sing the songs differently now\," she says. "It's the gift of time." Not just that: at the time of recording\, Bulat had just found out she was expecting her first child. (Her daughter was born in April 2021.) She admitted it to her collaborators only in the midst of recording\, down a wire from the vocal booth. "Hold it up to the light and let it grow\," \nBulat sang once -and again that fall\, as her body changed shape. "Tell me you're always my only." A song can change shape too —turning new leaves\, growing new blooms\, in unexpected seasons. You can play a record once; you can play it again. The Garden won't wear out. It's alive. \nBio by Sean Michaels \nClick here to purchase tickets to the show!

SUMMARY:Love Me Tender by Cas Public
DESCRIPTION:Klondike Institute of Art & Culture\nEvent Details\n\nTime: May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm – May 11\, 2026 @ 7:51 pm\n\nCost: \n\nVenue: \n\nAddress: \n\nPhone: \nContemporary dance performance choreographed by Hélène Blackburn in collaboration with Cai Glover and produced by Cas Public (Montreal) \nTempting fate\, Hélène Blackburn rises to the challenge of her first in situ work featuring several different versions: outdoors or indoors\, by day or by night. With an urban set\, clever low-tech lighting\, and contagious energy\, Love Me Tender has panache ! Produced with minimal resources\, this hymn to resilience echoes with lost innocence and the feel of a bygone era. \nLively and precise\, the masterful choreography flows with duets and solos that develop into trios\, quartets\, and ensemble work. The dancers morph into spectators\, lighting engineers\, and participants. Playing with expectations and genres\, this impromptu adventure uses shadows\, reflections\, and lights to express a relationship with others and with space\, evoking a sensation of rediscovered happiness through harmony and community. With music by Martin Tétreault and Dear Criminals and samples of songs by old-school crooners\, this performance is a refreshing breath of freedom that captures the spirit of our time. \nEarly show! 7:00 Start time. There is no bar or concessions. Feel free to bring waterbottles. Arrive in time to be seated shortly before 7:00.
