Parks Canada: S.S. Keno National Historic Site
The Yukon River has always been a critical lifeline in the lives of Yukoners. The S.S.Keno represents the fleet of sternwheelers that transported people and supplies in and out of the Yukon for over half a century. Built in 1922 to transport silver, lead and zinc ore from the mines on the Stewart River, the S.S. Keno was designed for travel to and from extremely isolated places.
For many, this steamer was the first and last contact with the outside world each season, and residents lived according to its schedule.
