The enchanting Tombstone Territorial Park is 2,200 squared kilometers of pristine wilderness with picturesque rugged peaks, permafrost landforms, and a wide array of unique flora and fauna.  The park is a legacy of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in land claim agreement and lies within their traditional territory.  Come for a day hike or a multi-day backcountry adventure!

The friendly and knowledgeable staff at the Tombstone Interpretive Centre will provide you with everything you need from trail maps to camping permits. Drop in for a cup of ‘Mountain Wild’ tea by the fire, visit the library, take part in an interpretive program or special event and enjoy the informative displays.

Driving Here

Driving the Dempster Highway is an experience like no other! Breathtaking landscapes that change at every turn await you on this 737 kilometer long all-weather gravel road, passing right through Tombstone Territorial Park. From downtown Dawson, take the North Klondike Highway for approximately 40 minutes.  Turn left onto the Dempster Highway and continue your drive for another hour, until you reach the Tombstone Interpretive Centre (located on the left).  There is a cardlock gas station at the Dempster turnoff, and the next services aren’t until Eagle Plains, 365 kilometers north on the Dempster, so make sure to fuel up before your journey!

Hiking & Camping

There are plenty of hiking trails and campsites- from easy beginner trails like the North Klondike River trail or Goldensides to back country overnight trips like Grizzly, Talus, or Divide Lake.  Trails and campsites are open from May to September.  For more information on planning your hiking or camping trip in Tombstone head over to Tombstone’s Plan your Trip page.

Staying Safe

Tombstone Territorial Park is a remote park- even for day hikes prepare for rough terrain, sudden weather changes, and animal encounters.  It’s always a good idea to check-in with the Tombstone Interpretive Centre before venturing out into the park, as the staff will have the scoop on current trail conditions. If you’d like to bring bear spray with you, you can borrow it from the Visitor Information Center in Dawson City. 

Winter in Tombstone

If it’s your dream to experience winter wilderness, then Tombstone this time of year is for you! On clear days, the mountains blanketed in brilliant white pop against the bluebird sky. Although the visitor facilities are closed in winter, the Dempster Highway and territorial park remain open, so bring your own equipment and snowshoe or ski across the vast snowy tundra.  Check road conditions before heading out, and be sure to have warm winter clothes with you.  For more information on winter in Tombstone, click here.
