History of the Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race
Percy DeWolfe arrived in the Yukon in 1989, only to find all of the good claims for gold were already taken. After a decade of fishing along the Yukon River, the hardy Dawson character began to deliver the mail between Eagle, Alaska and Dawson City, Yukon in 1910 – 1949. Percy carried mail by dog team, horse, and by boat year round. Battling ice flows during freeze up and break up, and the extreme winter weather in temperature of -50 below. Percy served his community courageously and in 1977, the first Percy DeWolfe Memorial Mail Race was held to commemorate his legacy and service. The Dawson City Dog Sports Club, a non-profit organization, hosts the race and ensures that Percy’s legacy is remembered and celebrated to this day.
