The Cremation of Sam McGee Opera
This exciting opera-in-development composed by Mattew Ricketts and librettist Royce Vavrek is an adaption of the poem The Cremation of Sam Mcgee and is further inspired by the work of Robert Service. The opera is not only a dramatization of Service’s incredible account of life in the north but also investigates other moments of fraternity and industry in Canada’s northwest.
A small cast of four men will play multiple roles, as they regale tales of northern living, as one might share over a campfire. The retelling of these tales takes place through narrative strands that explore many unique character types and experiences, set in familiar scenes from contemporary northern living and intermixed with scenes inspired directly by Robert Serice’s poem, The Cremation of Sam Mcgee.
Performances by: Peter Monaghan (bass-baritone), Micah Schroeder (baritone), Elias Theocharidis (tenor) and Sean Haid (countertenor).
